There has been a lot of talk lately about the release of Google Lens, what is it exactly and what purpose does it serve. Well do not fear, we at FireTap Marketing are here to answer all your questions about Google Lens.
What is Google Lens?
Google Lens was one of Google’s biggest announcements in 2017. However, it was exclusively available to Google Pixel users only. The search giants have now rolled out the AI – feature into its IOS search app. The app enables you to do things such as point your phone at an object, i.e. a car, and then ask Google Assistant what the object is. You will then be given the answer, as well as suggestions based on the answer – such as the nearest car dealership.
This is not the only impressive feature Google Lens has to offer, here is one that will really blow your socks off. Remember back in the day (by back in the day I mean a week ago) when accessing the Wi-Fi code included crawling under the cupboard, reading out the code, getting the code wrong, reading it out again only to realise the person was not using capitals? Well, those days are gone! With Google Lens, you are now able to take a picture of the SSID sticker on the back of the Wi-Fi router, after which your phone will automatically connect to the Wi-Fi network. That’s correct people, you will never have to read out the long Wi-Fi password again. #Victory
Asides from the scenarios above, Google Lens also offers the following features:
- Express – yo’self – Google Lens, similar to Samsung Bixby Vision, is able to identify restaurants, clubs, pubs, bars and cafes. A pop–up window appears showing the reviews, address and opening times.
- The Perfect LBD – You’re out shopping and you see a garment or household item that you fall in love with, but you are not sure if it is value for money. Well, you will never have to face that dilemma again. With Google Lens, you can take a picture of said item and it will identify that piece, similar items, as well as reviews and shopper’s opinions.
- Sorry, what? – When you highlight text in Google Lens, you are able to search that text with Google Assistant. This is a great way to identify the origin of a word, come games night.

Which devices can use Google Lens?
Although Google Lens was announced last year, it was only available for Pixel users. However, “in the coming weeks” (no set date has been revealed) supported devices from several manufacturers (see below) will be able to gain access to Google Lens.
- LG
- Motorola
- Xiaomi
- Sony
- HMD/Nokia
- Transsion
- TCL
- OnePlus
- BQ,
- Asus
This being said, a standalone app has also been developed and is now available too. This app supports a lot of different devices, so it would be worthwhile checking Google Play Store to see if it is available to you.
How can Google Lens affect your business?
The power of reviews is now more prominent than ever. Google Reviews, Facebook Reviews, Foursquare and Yell, to name a few, can all impact whether a person decides to make a purchase from you or not. With the information at their fingertips, it is vital to ensure you encourage a happy customer to leave a review. Not only will it leave a good impression and encourage potential customers to purchase from you, but it will also have a positive effect on your organic ranking. Google Reviews are a vital part of SEO and an easy way to start climbing the ranks.
